The "Hg-net - Mercury Network" - created in 1997 - had been one of the first thematic and bilingue networks dealing with artisanal mining in the Internet, mainly focusing on adequate mercury use by artisanal mining.

Nine years have passed since the creation of the Hg-net, nine years during which the Internet has evolved and changed. In it's early days, the Hg-net was just a single webpage with a listing of all member's email addresses, and email was the main networking tool: between members and with guests. In these days the Internet had still less than 10 million webpages and "Spam" wasn't an issue.

   Later in the 2000 and according with it's growth, the Hg-net evolved to an interactive website, driven by own custom-made software (powerful opensource tools were not yet available). But several of the interactive features of Geco were already available to users. As the Internet became a increasingly a wild junge, full of viruses and troyans, it became more and more dificult to maintain the custom-software; with downscaled limited interactive features the Hg-net was condemned to lose leadership - and to disappear sooner or later.

The objectives of the Hg-net were:

• free information exchange about use and effects of mercury, with special emphasis on small scale gold mining;
• help to distribute results of investigations and projects;
• join efforts, avoid duplicate activities and optimize resources.

All three goals fit perfectly into the wider and more integral scope of the Geco Platform. The third objective in particular calls for "joining efforts and avoid duplicate activities".

Thus, as the former "administrator" of the Hg-net, I've taken the decision to propose the "official"closure of the Hg-net, and to integrate (during the next weeks) the Hg-net files into the Geco (no information will be lost). This might allow for a re-animation of networking on a new and more stable platform and within a wider approach. As such, the closure of the Hg-net is by no means a "funeral", it is more of a "resurrection" by integration and fusion with the Geco Platform.

I'll try to contact (in the next weeks) all former members of the Hg-net, inviting them to join and support the initiative of the new Geco Platform (in case they still work on this topic).

La "Hg-net - Red Mercurio" -creada en el año 1997- ha sido una de la primeras redes temáticas y bilingües sobre minería artesanal en el Internet, tratando en particular y en forma prioritaria el tema del uso de mercurio en la minería artesanal.

Nueve años han pasado desde la creación de la Hg-net, nueve años durante los cuales la Internet ha evolucionado y cambiado mucho. En los tiempos tempranas de la Hg-net, era una sola página web con un listado de los correos de todos los miembros, y el correo electrónico era la principal herramienta de trabajo en red: entre los miembros y con visitantes. Era un tiempo cuando había todavía menos de 10 millones de páginas web, y no se conocía el "Spam".

Luego a partir del año 2000 y acorde con su crecimiento, la Hg-net avanzó a un portal interactivo, funcionando durante un buen tiempo con software propio (todavía no había los potentes paquetes software de fuente abierta de hoy). Tenía ya varias de las funciones que hoy tiene el Geco. Pero en la medida que la Internet se convirtió en una selva poblada de viruses y troyanos, ya no era posible mantener los programas propias; y con interactividad limitada, la Hg-net era condenada a perder su liderazgo - y a desaparecer.

Los objetivos de la Hg-net eran:

• intercambiar informaciones sobre uso y efectos de mercurio, sobre todo relacionado con la pequeña minería de oro,
• difundir los resultados de investigaciones y proyectos,
• unir esfuerzos, evitar duplicidades y optimizar recursos.

Los 3 objetivos de la Hg-net se insertan perfectamente en el enfoque más amplio e integral de la Plataforma Geco; considerando que el tercer objetivo de la Hg-net en particular, prevé "unir esfuerzos y evitar duplicidades".

En tal sentido, como anterior "administrador" de la Hg-net he tomado la decisión de proponer "oficialmente" el cierre de la Hg-net, e integrar (en las próximas semanas) su archivo -como herencia- en el Geco (ninguna información se perderá); lo cual permitirá "re-vivir" el trabajo en red sobre una plataforma mucho más sólida y con un enfoque mucho más amplio. En tal sentido el cierre de la Hg-net no es su "funeral" sino más bien su resucitación mediante integración y fusión con el Geco.

Intentaré comunicarme (en las próximas semanas) con todos los anteriores miembros de la Hg-net, a fin de invitarles a sumarse a la iniciativa del Geco (en caso que todavía trabajan en el tema).
